Richard Whitmore currently serves on the Governing Boards of the College Futures Foundation and EdSource, where he chairs the Investment and Finance Committees, respectively. He provides strategic consulting to educators and education institutions across California.
Previously, Mr. Whitmore served as Superintendent of the Lafayette School District, leading the district through a successful parcel tax campaign and the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was also Chief Administrative Officer at WestEd, a national nonprofit focused on education and community improvement. Earlier roles at WestEd included Chief Financial Officer, and prior to rejoining the organization, he was Superintendent of the Los Gatos Union School District.
Mr. Whitmore held senior leadership roles at the California Department of Education, including Chief Deputy Superintendent to State Superintendent Delaine Eastin. He was instrumental in shaping the state’s first accountability system, education budgets, and intervention strategies for low-performing schools.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University, Mr. Whitmore also holds an MBA from Harvard University. Originally from a small coastal town in Maine, he was named a Presidential Scholar in high school. He is the proud parent of three Occidental College graduates.
His extensive volunteer service includes board roles with The College Preparatory School, ConnectEd: The National Center for College and Career (six years as Chair), and the Lawrence Hall of Science Advisory Council. He also served 15 years on the Governing Board of the Acalanes Union High School District and has held numerous leadership roles in local academic and athletic organizations.
